Fulvicin (Griseofulvin)
General information
Fulvicin is an antifungal medication. It is used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails that do not respond to creams or lotions. This medication works by stopping the growth of fungi. It does not treat infections due to bacteria or yeast.
Directions
Take Fulvicin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Your doctor may recommend that you take Fulvicin with a fatty meal to increase its absorption into your body. The dosage is based on your medical condition. In children, dosage is also based on weight. The length of treatment depends on the type of infection you have.
Precautions
Before taking Fulvicin you should talk with your doctor if you have lupus. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. Avoid alcoholic beverages. The combination of alcohol and griseofulvin may cause flushing and a fast heart rate. This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Fulvicin may affect sperm and sperm production.
Contraindications
You should not use Fulvicin if you are allergic to it, or if you have porphyria, liver disease. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have nausea, vomiting, confusion, diarrhea, insomnia, headache, dizziness, tiredness, tingling in your hands or feet, hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, menstrual irregularities, mental or mood changes, joint or muscle pain, abdominal pain, dark urine, itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: blood thinners (warfarin), birth control pills, salicylates (aspirin, magnesium salicylate, choline salicylate), cyclosporine, barbiturates (pentobarbital, phenobarbital, butabarbital). Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, numbness, tingling, confusion.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
