Vantin (Cefpodoxime)
General information
Vantin is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Its active metabolite is cefpodoxime. This medication is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu).
Directions
Take Vantin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication by mouth, usually every 12 hours. Take it with a full glass of water. This medicine should be taken with food to help increase the absorption of the drug. Take this drug at evenly spaced intervals. Vantin will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
Precautions
Before taking Vantin you should talk with your doctor if you have kidney disease, or if you are on dialysis, or if you have intestinal problems, such as colitis. Elderly people may be at greater risk for side effects while using this drug.
Contraindications
Do not take Vantin if you are allergic to cefpodoxime or to other cephalosporin antibiotics (cofactor, cefditoren, cephalexin, cefixime, etc.). Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, swelling of the ankles or feet, tiredness, fast or pounding heartbeat, trouble breathing, sore throat, dark urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, change in the amount of urine, hives, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, rapid weight gain, back pain, muscle pain, anxiety, nervousness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Drug interactions
Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, especially: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (celecoxib, etodolac, naproxen, ibuprofen), mesalamine, antibiotics (bacitracin, streptomycin, gentamicin, amikacin), antacids, H2 blockers (ranitidine, cimetidine, nizatidine, famotidine), diuretics (hydrochlorothiazide, metolazone, furosemide, indapamide), cancer medicines (ifosfamide, carmustine, streptozocin, tretinoin), antiviral medicines (cidofovir, adefovir, foscarnet), methotrexate, probenecid, lithium. Interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, emesis.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
